Leading Periodontist in Coral Springs, FL

Tooth and Gum Preservation Specialists

Periodontal disease is defined as chronic inflammation of the gingival tissues and periodontal ligament due to specific or non-specific microorganisms that accumulate in plaque biofilms on the teeth. This inflammatory response results in alveolar bone loss and eventual tooth loss if not treated early and effectively. Periodontal surgery is one treatment option available to patients with periodontal disease, and at the Oral Surgery Center of Coral Springs, we are happy to provide this comprehensive service to our FL patients.

Signs You Need Periodontal Surgery

Your periodontist or oral surgeon will be able to tell if you need periodontal surgery based on a number of factors, including:

Your dental and medical history

The severity of your periodontitis

The depth of your gum pockets

The amount of tooth surface that has been lost to bone loss

The presence of gum recession

Your response to nonsurgical treatments

In general, periodontal surgery is recommended for patients with moderate to severe periodontitis who have not had success with other forms of treatment, such as scaling and root planing or antimicrobial therapy.

Types of Periodontal Surgery

There are a number of different types of periodontal surgery that can be performed, depending on your individual needs. Some of the most common types of periodontal surgery include:

Gingival flap surgery: This type of surgery is typically used to clean bacteria and tartar from deep gum pockets. The gums are lifted away from the teeth, and the tartar is removed. The gums are then sutured back in place.

Pocket reduction surgery: Pocket reduction surgery is used to reduce the depth of gum pockets. This type of surgery involves making small incisions in the gums and folding them back to gain access to the roots of the teeth. The tartar is removed, and the gum tissue is then stitched back in place.

Bone grafting: Bone grafting is a type of surgery that is used to treat areas of bone loss. This type of surgery involves taking bone from another area of the body and transplanting it to the area of bone loss.

Guided tissue regeneration: Guided tissue regeneration is a type of surgery that is used to promote the growth of bone and gum tissue. This type of surgery involves placing a barrier over the area of bone loss. This barrier prevents other tissues from growing in the area, allowing the bone and gum tissue to grow back.

Soft tissue grafts: Soft tissue grafts are used to treat areas of gum recession. This type of surgery involves taking tissue from another area of the mouth and grafting it to the area of gum recession.

The Periodontal Surgery Process

Periodontal surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, which means you will be able to go home the same day. The specific steps of the surgery will depend on the type of surgery being performed. In general, the steps of a periodontal surgery include:

Local anesthesia is used to numb the area around the teeth.

An incision is made in the gums.

The tartar is removed from the teeth and roots.

The gums are sutured back in place.

A dressing is placed over the surgical site.

You will be given postoperative instructions on how to care for your mouth.
